Changes that Everyone is Talking About But You Haven't Heard Of

Updated: Jan 1, 2019

After having an interview with the principal of LHHS, Mr. Diamond, here is some information I have uncovered about the future of LH. There have been some major changes being discussed at recent school board meeting and teacher gatherings that will directly affect students and their schedules. It all started when 90% of extra curricular clubs and activities were taken out of LHMS and LHHS at the start of the 2018-2019 school year. However, the huge change that most students have not heard of is that the clubs are back. It was a complete reversal of the decision due to local and federal funding that funded the stipend for the teachers to run their clubs. However, as good as that sounds, it’s only confirmed to last for the rest of the 2018-2019 school year. This means that next year and beyond, there is no guarantee of clubs staying. The administration has heard the students and parents’ complaints and wanted to quickly act on the issue. The board has approved the action and there is a list of teachers who are in charge of each club even though it has not been publicly released yet.

There are also more changes coming to LHHS and they are policy changes and schedule changes. There is talk about the administration possibly making Kinesiology class to be moved to a full schedule instead of just 3 letter days at a time. There will be a swimming test at the high school for new incoming freshmen in future years. So, if a student thinks that they are proficient in swimming skills before they take the class, they can take the test and, if they pass, they won't have to take swimming the whole year. If students do not take the test or if they do not pass, they would have to take swimming for the whole year. The test will be physical and take place in the pool where students will demonstrate their swimming capabilities but is not specifically said how in detail. This plan is approved by the school board but is not yet fully planned or put into place. There is also talk about an extracurricular club: Journalism Club. It would function the same way any other club would but would be tightly associated with the Journalism Class.
